Space Giants
Some of the largest engines in the world are needed to
power space vehicles.It takes a huge amount of energy to escape the pull of
erth’s gravity .To travel in to outer space,a vehicle must travel at 24,900 mph
(40,071.5km/h)-that’s more than 15 items faster than a supersonic airplanes.
Space Shuttle
The spce shuttle is the first vehicle that can travel in
to space and return to earth at the end of the mission. Before the space
shuttle was invented,astronauts went to spce in rockets,but most of the roket
was abandoned in space.The astronauts returned to earth in side a tiny
module.
Liquid fuel
Three engines are at the back of the shuttle.They use
liquid fule ,stored in a huge tank as
big as a large swimming pool which is fastend to outside of the shuttle.
Lanuch
On its launch pad,the space shuttle stands higher than
a 15-story buiding .It uses fiv engines
to take off.
Booster Engines
Two more roket engines are fastened to the sides of the
spacecraft.They give the shuttle the extra boost it needs to travel in to
space.These rokets burn solide fule .When the shuttle is 20miles(45km)
heigh,the roket boosters run out of fule.They fall away and parachute back to
earth.
